A good writing quote can give me goosebumps. For those days when the well is feeling dry and a tad echo-y, I keep a running list of my favorite quotes—things I’ve read, things I’ve edited, things I’ve found in the WD archives, things people have .   A Sense of Hierarchy "Editors need a hierarchical sense of a manuscript, a book, or article. They need to see its structure, its totality, before they become involved in minutiae. A writer should be on the alert when an editor starts by fixing commas or suggesting little cuts when the real problem resides at the level of organization or strategy or point of : Richard Nordquist.

Why Editors Reject Your Story. As many of you know, I judge stories for the Writers of the Future contest. Today I want to talk about those stories that get an Honorable Mention.

This is a key to raising your work from just being a commercial book or movie to becoming a bestseller. Horrible editors: Recall and regret (Guest post) November 2, Ap James Durston Uncategorized In a recent post, I went on at length explaining why editors.

English, Book edition: Why editors regret: first aid for the free-lance, together with a foreward by S.H. Prior and contributions by Katherine Susannah Pritchard [i.e. Katharine Susannah Prichard] and others. Dillon, Gerald. 2) Presentation: When an author is unaware of the publishing house’s guidelines and sends in the wrong elements, more often than not the work won’t even be read.

Be sure to send an introductory letter, a synopsis, and however much of the book is requested (normally three chapters or 10, words). But Saletan says spending time getting a book noticed doesn't mean an editor doesn't edit.

She often does most of the hands-on work at night or on weekends. And it begins when a proposal or rough. Some manuscripts may need professional editing before they’re ready to be viewed by agents or editors. Others won’t.

Thus I find it problematic that this column says “it’s best to always hire a professional book editor”–the words “best” and “always” suggesting that no manuscript could possibly be ready without such assistance.

Perhaps the author tried to create a sense of mystery, but in the process held back too much information. Or the story has a naive narrator, but that point-of-view leaves the editor with too little information. This type of misstep means the editor puts down the book.

NOTE: This book does NOT solve whatever regret your brought upon yourself. The book I mentioned might help you with that as there is a "Problem-Solving" section in there.

This book is just about regaining mental peace and being able to move on. Good luck and think about your choices by: Why Do I Hurt. () 1st Edition. #N#Adriaan Louw (Author) › Visit Amazon's Adriaan Louw Page. Find all the books, read about the author, and more.

He argued, approximately, that book editors have become obsolete in this day and age, for reasons somewhat related to the way writers are now chosen. Then, select the top result for Registry Editor (Desktop app). Press and hold or right-click the Start button, then select Run.

Enter regedit in the Open: box and select OK. A comma splice occurs when a writer uses a comma by itself to connect two independent clauses, and speaking from an editorial perspective, I will tell you that they are evil.

Joe can attest to the fact that they’re one of my biggest pet peeves. So in order to prevent your writing from getting on an editor’s (or an astute reader’s) nerves. I'm not usually a huge fan of tag videos, but I really liked the booktube real talk tag going around, so here we are.

Original video: Regrets Big and Small. Regret has been defined as a negative emotion predicated on an upward, self-focused, counterfactual inference (Gilovich & Medvec, ; Zeelenberg, ).Regret feels bad because it implies a fault in personal action: You should have done it differently, hence self-blame is a component of regret (Connolly & Zeelenberg, ).

Cited by: A good question, as the company I work for do espouse approaching editing in quite a systematic way. I always look to remove instances where the author is telling rather than showing, as well as adverbs, segments of over-explanation, descriptions of mundane or uninteresting ephemera, and anything resembling cliche, as well those novel-killing monstrosities: "Suddenly, "then," and any bizarre.

Although I am indeed wearing my jammies at the time of this writing, the stereotype about editors isn’t nearly as true. Editors, though busy, want their writers to succeed.

The relationship is symbiotic. Without writers, editors don’t have content and without content, publications would fall apart. Start with a stellar pitch. “Marry, and you will regret it; don’t marry, you will also regret it; marry or don’t marry, you will regret it either way.
